Steve Jobs has passed away

Apple's website announces the sad news that Apple co-founder and former CEO Steve Jobs has passed away. Jobs was 56 years old, and had been struggling with complications related to pancreatic cancer over the past several years. Apple leaves the following message on their website in tribute to Jobs:

Apple has lost a visionary and creative genius, and the world has lost an amazing human being. Those of us who have been fortunate enough to know and work with Steve have lost a dear friend and an inspiring mentor. Steve leaves behind a company that only he could have built, and his spirit will forever be the foundation of Apple.

iTunes Review of fgBrowser

Hello dear trusty fgBrowsers,

Today I read an interesting review at the US iTunes Store:

I don't know how the reviewer comes to this conclusion, as the "normal" app is not sold as an universal app. So it's just not made for the iPad.

However there is an universal build of the private version, however by the lack of time not the same feature rich version as the regular fgBrowser, but it still does it's purpose very well providing an easy possibility to be fullscreen gesture based on the iPad.

Still there are plenty features / ideas in the pipe to get a fast uncomplicated browsing experience in real fullscreen.

Mobile websites issue!

The update introduced a misbehavior with some mobile sites... Sites like macrumors use some sort of forwarding to their mobile forum.. fgbrowser misintreprets those links as AppStore candidates and forwards the link to iOS, however it's of course only meaningfull regarding an AppStore app link. ( to bring up the AppStore )

I've already submitted a fix to Apple hope it's getting approved soon!

Seems like the version 4.2 has always some sort of shortcoming... iOS also hat a very short life on 4.2 and skipped somehow immediately to 4.2.1...

Again I'm sorry for any inconvenience caused!

iPad Issue; iPhone 4 Issue

I'm sorry to announce...
There are two big issues with the current selling fgBrowser versions.

First fgBrowser Private for the iPad... It crashes immediately. I submitted a new iPad release for Approval, please bare with me.

Second, any fgBrowser version for the new iPhone 4. The status indicator seems there to uses another implementation. See here [stackoverflow] for more details.

I've done a quick workaround to fix the usability, but in respect to look and feel, I'm not happy with my solution. I hope Apple will fix the UIActivityIndicatorView in there "Signaling update".

User interface - 3 finger down

Hey every new fgBrowser,

to access the favs and history, lay down 3 fingertips onto the screen...

Other gestures:

2 fingers parallel....

... bottom to top: lock or unlock screen autorotation (accelerometer)
... top to bottom: access a website based subcontent menu
- email this page (with preview image attached)
- add / remove to / from favs
- open in safari
- reload
... left to right or vice versa: navigate through current history (ie like clicking on the back and forth button in safari)

To save an image to the camera roll, just align the picture so it's fits your screen and press the "sleep/wake" and "home" button of your iPhone simultaneously. You will see a short flash and it will be saved in your camera roll...

Hey there trusty fgBrowsers,

there is a slight issue with the email text. To fix it please go to your general iPhone "Settings" scroll down to "Multitouch" and open once all the hidden settings for your fgBrowser. (Hit the Multitouch with the lock symbol for the private one) There are some handy settings ready to be set:

- scroll to top: if enabled touch the top of the screen and the current page will scroll to the top
- scroll to bottom: if enabled touch the bottom of the screen and the current page scroll all to the bottom
- right swipe to go back: if enabled a swipe left to right will navigate backwards otherwise swipe right to left to go backwards
- keep history for: automatically deletes old history entries after "x" days or never
- clear only history: delete whole history after restart
- clear favs&history: deletes all information even your favs

The next setting is quite handy if you like to use fgBrowser as a default widescreen browser:

- remember orientation: fgBrowser will come up in the last "frozen" (2 - finger swipe down to up gesture) even if the accelerometer says something else. Quite handy if you prefer surfing in fullscreen widescreen as many of you prefer.
(After launch a locked or unlocked sign will show you if the current orientation is locked in)

- Mail Settings:
Define you default mail text and subject, decide if you like some preview image attached to your mail.

Sometimes I get asked whats the big difference between both fgBrowser variants. So for today let us focus on the "Private fgBrowser"...

Unlike Safari and the non private fgBrowser - they automatically write a full history of your browsing habits- the "Private fgBrowser" does not....

It takes you even a big step further! It allows you to add pass-code protected bookmarks, and "freely" visible bookmarks to keep up a good charade. Quickly enter a 4 digit code to view your very own private bookmarks.

In the worst case scenario...e.g.. somebody enters the room you just have to hit the "home button" on your iPhone / iPod / iPad and it takes you back to the iPhones home screen. If you restart the private browser, it will just open your defined homepage.

Controls:
3 fingers down: this one will bring up the bookmarksection.
2 fingers swipe left/right: previous page / next page (customizable @ general settings)
2 fingers up: lock the current orientation and disable autorotation!! hey with this one and the remember orientation setting you will make fgBrowser to act like a true widescreen browser automatically after startup! Try it!

2 fingers down: some features for the current open page: mail, set homepage, add to favs, open in safari

If activated (general settings)
Hit the top of the screen to scroll to the top of the current page.
Hit the bottom of the screen to scroll to the end of the current page!

The controls between fgBrowser and Private fgBrowser are very similar! Just try it!!!

I had a very very arduous time the last half year. But as I got so many mails asking for an update... I couldn't resist. I've submitted an update to Apple:

- fixed google search (it was really time!)
- the "favs" tab bookmarks are now sortable
- email subject and body customizable via general preferences
- some bugfixes and improvements.

It seems google had changed the way how a quicksearch works. As the rendering engine is based on webkit you may encounter problems using google by the quick search bar. As I'm currently abroad, I'm will not be able to fix this issue until I'm going to return home at the and of august.

If all codes are used, you may get fgBrowser normal, and the private fgBrowser in the AppStore for a very little commission, for a multitouch web browser with some handy features (history, scroll to top/bottom with a touch, passcode protected bookmarks, email with preview-image and a lot more!)

REJECTED, because of RATING

Hey there my trusty fgBrowser people.

Apple strikes again. After the missing YEN issue the private update (which is essential for a smooth 3.0 experience) got rejected, because I've rated it 4+. As a matter of nature, you are able to browse to any site you want with this browser. Even if you pull all restrictions on your iPhone up you'll be still able to browse even with Safari to any mature content site. So I didn't find a 17+ rating for Safari either.

As I do not control which sites people browse to I do not think the rating 17+ would be applicable to my fgBrowser.

The even bigger downside: I have to resubmit my browser again for reviewing. As I've learned from history, the reviewing process takes (since the 3.0 update) at least 3-4 weeks until you get the first notification of failure or success.

This is a bad'n'sad day in fgBrowser history, hope things will turn out soon, or Apple is just kidding and they make me a nice birthday present to me tomorrow!

I've submitted new fully 3.0 compliant versions of fgBrowser and private fgBrowser! After abig increase of speed, and the wiped away form bug and links not working bug (which was caused by they 2.0->3.0 iPhone OS update) there are some handy new features:

- send page link as email is now modal and contains a screenshot of the current page as attachment

- mailto: links will also work an utilize the new modal email feature

- delete history automatically after "x" days

- delete history once (without favs)

- delete all bookmarks (with favs)

- easier scroll to top/bottom function

- url / google keyboard closable

So I hope the whole review process is speeding up...

fgBrowser 2.6 released - private version still pending

I'm very happy to announce: fgBrowser 2.6 is finally released!

Some users reported a glitch with formular data. After filling one field, the browser gets unresponsive to links or other formular data. This is a compatibility issue with the 3.0 iPhone OS It's a bug which should be addressed by Apple with an 3.0.1 update.[/INFO]

Instructions how to setup your private fgBrowser 2.6 bookmarklet:

manually install:

1.) Launch Mobile Safari (on your iPhone)

2.) Surf to "google.com" and make a new bookmark of google.com

3.) Go to your bookmarks, touch "edit" and touch on your newly created google.com bookmark

4.) This will bring up the edit screen. Put there "private multitouch" as a title (this text is up to you)

5.) The very important part:

In the URL field type in exactly the next bold line

6) After that you may return to the bookmark screen

7) From now on, if you like to send an safari bookmark to fgBrowser, just surf to the site with safari, bring up the bookmark screen, and tap on "private multitouch"

I dedicate this release to the one and only MICHAEL JACKSON!

But the Private fgBrowser 2.6 update is still in review und should be available soon! It features also the "touch loading indicator icon to STOP loading" and some iPhone 3.0 improvements. Currently if you are using 2.5 on a prior 3.0 device everything will work fine. With 3.0 AND the PRIVATE version you will encounter problems following some links. This issue is already fixed in 2.6.

I'm currently emailing with apple about the AutoFill feature. Hope fgBrowser will soon utilize this one.

Unfortunately Apples SDK and approval processes are against me. The 2.6 update of the normal fgBrowser is still pending. They also got several flaws which I have to find workarounds for it, to make an easer and faster and nicer to use webbrowser for the iPhone. I dream of the day when I touch a link in the mail app and fgBrowser opens. I'm currently in touch with the apple developer stuff to bring new features like AutoFill; Image Saving and many many (History Autocompletion -> search...) more to you! I don't give up, even if the way will be a very rocky one.

After several e-mails and a phone call from the reviewer team, its finally available as an update in the AppStore.

So what's new:

- it got a readable name and a new discrete icon

- a pass-code protected bookmark section

- fast scroll to to / bottom (must be enabled under the general settings of your iphone, just scroll down until "multitouch")

- remember last orientation / autorotation lock -> Use it as an permanent widescreen browser for example...

- customize @ general setting

- flip the history back'n'forth gesture if you like

- Open a safari page in your private browser

There are many improvements done, which I'm not able to deliver because because I'm still waiting for approval. As the approval process takes so long in the moment (I'm waiting over 2 weeks now), I'm going to focus on the nearly released 3.0 iPhone OS. There will be a bunch of new features and further improvements!

There are a few things you may try if fgBrowser crashes with big (many images) pages:

- reboot your iPhone, this releases all memory which is retained by safari

- close all pages in safari (this gives more memory to other apps!)

- send an email with a link to the particular problem page, so I can evaluate.

There is a review in the US AppStore which says: "it worked for about 20 seconds".

As a tiny hint I would suggest you to lay 3 fingertips down on your iPhone screen. This will bring up the bookmarks, history, url field and google.

To navigate fast back and forth, just swipe parallel with 2 fingers to left (back) or right (forward)

enable / disable accelerometer -> swipe up with 2 fingers

bring up a context menu -> swipe down with 2 fingers

As you do so, fgBrowser works fine :-) Hope you enjoy :-)

my 2.5 update is now available in iTunes

NEW: fgBrowser gets a configuration panel under general settings with following settings:

enable / disable Scroll-To-Top feature (tap on the top scrolls to the top of the page)
enable / disable Scroll-To-Bottom feature (tap on the bottom scrolls to the bottom of the page)

force language of google search (Upon request from Hong Kong)
enable / disable "remember last orientation" --> this feature allows you to use fgBrowser as a landscape browser. With this option enabled fgBrowser remembers your last orientation and the autorotation state. After starting fgBrowser a short flashing lock/unlock icon informs you about the current autorotation state (enabled = open lock or disabled = closed lock). (Upon request from Japan. They like to browse always in landscape mode)
saving pictures -> double tap on the image to zoom in and press "sleep/wake button" and home button together. You will see a short white flashing of the screen, and your image will be saved under the camera roll (works in every fgBrowser version)

Bugfix: Javascript caused new window links will now also open.

a minor update making the history swipe gestures customize-able is in progress and the possibility to stop loading, by simply touching the loading indicator.

I'm also working on adBlock,Google and URL suggestions, a cache system

Apple has just approved my "fgBrowser - multitouch fullscreen web browser" 2.0. and

"fgB Private Room - a multitouch fullscreen web browser".
I hope you enjoy the new features and improved speed. I've changed the name so everybody knows that they do not have to shake their lovely iPhones for fullscreen browsing.

Some people asked for a "private" one, and why there are 2 versions of fgBrowser:

So let me explain:
It is hard to make a private browser and a "history" able browser in one app. Not because it would be hard to code. Noo! It is hard because you (as a user) can't really distinguish if you are now surfing private or not.
So if you wan't to surf to some adult sites, just start fgB Private. For all other sites just use your normal fgBrowser!

I'm very happy to announce the first update for BOTH gesture based fullscreen browsers fgBrowser (the white one) and fgB Private (the red one).

NEW

- upon many many many requests: a better visible loading indicator

- editable titles for the bookmarks (url as well, if you have to tweak something...)

IMPROVEMENTS

- browsing should be a bit faster (hard to measure - I know)

- bookmark scrolling way faster

- readability of bookmarks improved

- little bug fixes

The next one will require at least iPhone OS 2.2. Because there are internal improvements of 2.2 which I'm going to use, to make surfing even more fun & fast :-)

INSTRUCTIONS:

Touch with 3 fingers anywhere at the screen to open the bookmark screen. There you may enter a url, start a google search. Or just tap on a site your favorite site. To add a bookmark use the 2 finger swipe down gesture and select "add to favs". If you like to remove a bookmark you may do so by using the swipe gesture again, or hit the edit button in the bookmark view.

Your bookmarks a sorted 2 different ways:

Hit - Count: Every time you visit a bookmark the hit-counter increases by one -> Ordered by hit-count -> Higher hit-counter on top
Date: Your bookmarks ordered by last access date/time.

For every visit the bookmark gets a higher rank in the "Hit Count" view.
You may view your visited pages historically by visit date. So you use the "Date" view.
I've you like certain websites you may add it to your "Favs" view either by using the "2-finger-swipe-down" gesture or you switch in the "Edit" mode and just tap on each page you like.

The date under the page title shows your very last visit date of the particular page. The number in the bracelets represents the hit-count
GESTURES:

2 finger swipe left: go one page back

CUSTOMIZE

you may enable the scroll to top / bottom feature, set a custom google search language, or enable / disable "remember last orientation" --> this feature allows you to use fgBrowser as a landscape browser. As it remembers your last orientation and autorotation state.

A short flashing lock / unlock icon informs you about the current setting (with the remember last orientation feature ON)

tonight (at least for europeans) my app status changed to "ready for sale"....and is now ready to download directly on every iPhone or iPod Touch.... At least for the cool ones ;-)

so... I'm still waiting to get approved into the AppStore... As soon as it's online, I'm going to post an online help, how you get a more sophisticated iPhone browsing experience...

You will get a history of your last visited pages, a list of your favourite pages and also a list with your most visited pages at all. On top - there is the availability of browsing completely anonymously... Just press the home button and nobody (unless you) will know where you have been before...

There are some really cool gestures to give you full control without wasting any space at all.

I've decided to make 2 different gesture based fullscreen browsers. Both come with a innovative bookmark-system, but only one with a full featured history.

So you may choose between privacy or history...
